Smart Steps for Buying Life Insurance

Last updated September 2026

A little preparation before you apply can meaningfully change the rate you end up with.

Before You Apply

  • Buy while you’re younger and healthier — rates only go up with age, and a health change can’t be undone before applying
  • Get any manageable condition (blood pressure, cholesterol, weight) as controlled as possible before your exam, if you have time
  • Know your family health history — some applications ask about it
  • Avoid major life or health changes right before applying, if you can time it

While Shopping

  • Compare more than one carrier — the same health profile can land in very different rate classes at different companies
  • Be specific and accurate on health questions rather than vague — vague answers tend to slow things down and get rated more conservatively
  • Understand whether you’re looking at term or permanent coverage, and whether that matches what you actually need it for
  • Ask what riders are available and whether any fit your situation

After You’re Approved

A policy isn’t a "set it and forget it" purchase. Revisit your coverage after major life events, and if your health has genuinely improved since you applied (weight loss, quitting tobacco, a resolved condition), it may be worth checking whether you now qualify for a better rate.
